Facing off against cancer, Lauren Murphy wanted to be certain of one thing: that her children would know how hard she tried to stay.

In an ambulance racing through the night, Lauren Murphy tells her husband Antony she loves him. Then she closes her eyes, not knowing if she’ll open them again.

She wakes to a false dawn: she’s alive, but the cancer she was rid of is back — and it’s spread.

Worry is gnawing at her too: worry that she won’t see her son start school, or her daughter graduate. Most of all, she worries about leaving them without their mum.

So she starts documenting: birthdays, hospital appointments, chemo sessions, living room dance parties; so they’ll always know her — and know how much they were loved.

A Kiwi couple have spent the last few months travelling the world, without working, after coming up with a quick way of saving cash - moving to Australia.

Hospital pharmacist Eva Mitchell and Engineer Tim Mitchell had originally planned on doing the classic OE in Europe, but after Covid hit, they decided instead that they wanted to travel the globe.

Not wanting to backpack, they knew they’d need a significant amount of money. So the plan was hatched to move to Australia - which resulted in roughly a 30% pay rise for both of them, while doing almost the exact same jobs.

Protecting Paradise

It’s raining as the first quarantine-free flight from Auckland touches down in Rarotonga, mist settling on the craggy mountains commanding the heart of the island. 

As Covid-19 ravages the world, forcing unprecedented lockdown measures and causing millions of deaths, the 15 islands and atolls that make up the Cook Islands are yet to see a single case. 

But its virus-free status - shared by only 13 other countries worldwide - came at a price. The threat of the virus and subsequent border closure sent once-heaving businesses into hibernation, putting its tourism-reliant economy in dire straits.

So when the first batch of “precious” vaccines landed in Rarotonga on May 18, coinciding with the newly opened and much-anticipated New Zealand travel bubble, there was a sense of relief and hope for the freedoms it may bring. 

But freedom is fragile and there’s much at stake.
